When you begin your University journey, you quickly learn the fine balancing act between study, work and life in general. However, life is unpredictable and an unexpected financial inconvenience, especially for students with no support network to fall back on, may leave them feeling overwhelmed.
Add today’s cost-of-living crisis, and what was once a minor financial inconvenience can seem insurmountable and become the tipping point between a student continuing their studies or covering life’s basic needs.
These are choices no student should have to make.
In a self-selecting survey, 38% of student respondents reported that they were in insecure housing. 56% said financial hardship had affected their academic results, and 65% said it had harmed their mental health.
Our future generation shouldn’t have to face such challenges so early in life—they should be enjoying life, not burdened by constant worry and the rising cost of basic necessities. Imagine not knowing where your next meal will come from—this is a reality that far too many students are experiencing.
Together, We Can Fight Student Food Insecurity
In 2016, the UWA Student Guild recognized a growing need among students facing food insecurity and established The Food Pantry. What started as a small cupboard of essential items has grown into a vital resource, operating on a no-questions-asked basis to support students in need.
However, while the demand for support has increased tenfold, the supply of essential items has not.
Your donation can make an immediate and meaningful difference. By financially supporting The Food Pantry, you can help provide relief to students struggling with the rising cost of living, ensuring they have access to basic necessities.
With your generosity, we can continue to support those who need it most.
